Mobile Phone Recycling

Technology News 2 Comments

With an expected rise of mobile bills being sold to reach 2009 by the year 2009, the need to find the best use for the unused and discarded mobiles piling up each year has become an important concern.  Mobile phone recycling has become the call of the day for more than one reason.  Not only does recycling mobile phones reduce the potential negative effects on the environment as a result of the contamination caused by the composing substances but it also helps to generate money and recover valuable parts for future use from the mobiles.  Why recycle?

  • Mobile phones contain numerous substances which need to be disposed of in safe and efficient manner such as

Cadmium - The Cadmium in the battery from a single old phone could seriously contaminate 600,000 litres of water, which is why it is being phased out of new batteries.

Lead - used to solder components to the printed wiring boards; lead affects the immune, endocrine and central nervous systems, and causes serious damage to children’s brains

Brominated flame retardants - used in wiring boards and plastic cases; these have been associated with cancer, liver damage and problems with the neurological, immune and endocrine systems.

Beryllium – is used in contacts and springs; causes serious lung damage, and emits highly toxic dioxins when the phones are incinerated in waste plants.

  • Helps to extract and reuse valuable materials and parts of the phone

Recovery of precious and semiprecious metals - by extracting metals from ground up mobile parts and batteries
Recovery of plastic – using energy-from-incineration plastic is recovered from components while outer body plastic may be granulated and reformulated for use in mouldings

Recovery and downgrading of valuable components- flash memory devices.

Reuse parts- such as aerials, battery connectors, PCBs (printed circuit boards), connectors including gold-coated edge contacts on PCBs, ICs (integrated circuits), keyboards, LCD screens, lenses, microphones, phone housings, screws, SIM card assemblies and speakers.

There are several companies within the UK, which contribute towards these noble causes by helping to recycle mobile phones that have been discarded.  Envirofone.com is the UK’s number 1 online mobile phone recycling site that is free to use, and which pays you cash for your old mobile and helps the environment and charities through the process.  In the last year they have paid out over £1.5 million to users, £300,000 in donations made to charities and thousands of pounds more are paid out every week. They accept both Working and non-working phones. According to a report, there are over 80 million old mobile phones lying around in the UK alone having a value of £1.6 Billion. Want to know what you could buy with that kind of money.

A Look At The Upcoming Nokia N96

Latest Mobile Phone News, Mobile Phone Manufacturers, Mobile Phone Releases, Nokia Mobile Phones, Smartphone, Technology News No Comments
One of the next set of N-Series phones from Nokia, the Nokia N96 builds on all the success of its predecessor, the N95 but with some extra features bringing it up to speed to be one of the top phones in the late-summer market.Once again we see the great camera features of the 5 Megapixel, Carl Zeiss camera with full realtime video (640×480, 30fps), WiFi, HSDPA 3G, and music features like the FM radio, but this time the radio includes RDS, the storage is up to a whopping 16GB with a MicroSD slot for further expansion, the GPS is tweaked to geotag your photos with the location of their capture and the N96 is equipped for DVB-H Mobile TV.While not available just yet in the UK, the inclusion of DVB-H is an interesting one. Following recent events that have seen the EU officially backing DVB-H as the standard Europe wants to see for mobile television and the authorisation of Oftel for the release of the frequencies this year, it should hopefully be set to be making an appearance around the time as the Nokia N96 is launched, if not shortly after. It is however very much a “watch this space” technology and it remains to be seen if it will prove to be worth the inclusion on Nokia’s part in the N96.

Once again this is a very full featured phone from Nokia, the N95 and more recent N95 8GB came in with a very impressive feature set, but the Nokia N96 builds on that even more, and looks as though they are becoming worthy of their “Mobile Computer” title that raised a few eyebrows at the start of the N-Series.

The latest in the Nokia luxury phone range, and third incarnation of the 8800 range, the Nokia 8800 Arte and Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte are the next step from the premium 8800 Sirocco.

With a good solid set of specifications, such as a 3.2 Megapixel Autofocus camera, 2 inch QVGA (240 x 320 pixel) screen, 3G connectivity and 1GB of internal memory, the Nokia 8800 Arte will serve well, but then when you’re buying a top-quality phone it is to be expected!

Along with a premium phone, you always get extras, so what’s in the box? Well inside we find the well-matched Nokia BH-803 Bluetooth headset, a lined Leather Pouch and matching Desk Stand.

While the original 8800 Arte has been out for a bit now, the new release of the Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte sees a style revision on the first. This revision is not in the sense that it is coloured Sapphire, but rather with a leather appearance to its polished steel exterior and an actual sapphire gemstone set into the navigation pad!

All in all the Nokia 8800 Arte and 8800 Sapphire Arte are solid, minimalist but classy models with all the style of their cost. A subtle attention grabber for those who like to quietly let on that they can afford it.
