Dual SIM mobile phones are handsets which hold two SIM cards instead of the usual one. The main benefit of this is only having to carry one handset in situations where you may be carrying two. For example, while roaming in a foreign country one SIM card would be your usual number and the second could be a local network SIM card to give you cheaper outgoing calls. Back home you could use one network or tariff optimized for peak time calls and another that gives you more free off peak minutes. Business people may wish to have two numbers active during the day, one for personal calls or incoming calls only, with the other line for dialing out.

It is possible to buy twin SIM adaptors to covert your existing mobile phone to take two SIM cards, but these often require different batteries, modified phone casing or even cutting the SIM cards down to accommodate them. Some handset manufacturers like Samsung are starting to realise there is a market for devices that hold two SIM cards. The Samsung D880 Duos is a slider style phone with 3.2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth and tri-band EDGE network connectivity.

Unlike early versions of twin SIM devices the Dual SIM mobile phones can have both cards active simultaneously to make and receive calls or send/receive SMS messages. The user can select which card to use for mobile browsing, e-mail and other multimedia services. Your WAP/MMS/E-mail profiles are switched automatically when a different card is selected. When you receive calls, the name of the card that is carrying the call flashes on screen. In case of missed calls, the relevant card is also indicated. On some dual SIM phones each SIM card can even be assigned it’s own ringtone!
