BlackBerry 8110 Pearl

The BlackBerry 8110 Pearl is a mobile messaging phone aimed at offering a high level of connectivity to a wider audience than the corporate market in which BlackBerry made its name.
It combines a half QWERTY keyboard with the familiar RIM email client and internet access through quad band GPRS in addition to telephone and SMS services.

The BlackBerry 8110 is based on the previous 8100 model and it retains some of the features which made this device popular. Bluetooth 2.0 for wire free file sharing and hands-free calls, USB port for desktop synchronisation, and microSD card slot to enable memory expansion.

What has been added to the mix is built-in GPS to offer a mobile navigation solution and the camera has also been upgraded to a 2 megapixel item. This should ensure photo's are of higher quality than before.
Other than this it is hard to notice any difference. RIM has retained the same user interface for the BlackBerry 8110 and this is easily navigated with the Trackball at the top of the keypad. The media player takes care of music and video content easily, while the document viewer allows Microsoft Office attachments to be seen on the colourful screen.

Overall, the Blackberry 8110 Pearl is a small scale upgrade to the original Pearl. One can't help but wonder why other useful features such as 3G, Wi-Fi and A2DP stereo Bluetooth were left out. Unless you really want GPS in your Blackberry it is unlikely you will benefit from upgrading, and if you are new to smartphones there are others worth considering.
